Record Sniper Shot for Canadian Sniper
A world-record sniper shot by a Canadian sniper detachment could never have been made with the ammunition they were issued when they left Edmonton last winter, the triggerman said in a recent interview.
The Canadian .50-caliber rounds have a maximum range of between 2,200 and 2,300 metres. The U.S. rounds, they discovered, “fly farther, faster,” said Cpl. “Bill”, a 26-year-old native of Fogo Island, Nfld.
The two-man Canadian team, coupled with American Sgt. Zevon Durham of Greenville, S.C., made the kill from 2,430 metres on the second shot.

Precision Sniper Shots
The first blew a bag from the hand of their target, an al-Qaeda fighter walking on a road.
“He didn’t even flinch,” said Bill, who spoke to The Canadian Press on condition that his real name not be used.
“We made a correction and the next round hit exactly where we wanted it to. Well, a bit to the right.”
The kill, one of more than 20 unofficially accredited to Canadian snipers during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan’s Shah-i-Kot Valley, beat the 35-year-old record of 2,500 yards, or 2,250 metres, set by U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock in Duc Pho, South Vietnam.
Soldier of Fortune magazine estimated the number of kills made by the Canadians after talking to several U.S. soldiers in Kandahar for a cover story in its August edition.
The snipers themselves will not confirm the figure.

McMillan Sniper Training Ranges

McMillan Sniper Training facilities are separated into two major sections.

This course is not a fancy name for a standard carbine course and these are not standard carbines. Our students consistently shoot these rifles accurately well past 900 yards. Rob Furlongs Record Breaking Sniper Shot
Rob Furlong , a former corporal of the Canadian Forces , holds the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat, at 2 ,430 metres (2,657 yd, 12.08 furlongs , or 1.51 miles).
Established in 2005 , the shot exceeds that of Sgt Brian Kremer of the U.S. Army’s 2 nd Ranger battalion in 2004 Iraq (2 ,340 m or 2 ,560 yd).
It also exceeds, by 144 metres (157 yd or 472 ft), the late U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock ’s 1967 record of 2 ,286 metres (2 ,500 yards, or 1.42 miles) and Arron Perry ’s record of 2 ,310 m (2 ,526 yd / 1.435 mi), set just before Furlong’s record.
Born in Fogo Island , Newfoundland , Furlong taught himself to fire a rifle ambidextrously .
In 2002 , Furlong participated in Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan ’s Shah-i-Kot Valley as a member of the 3 rd Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI).
His sniper team included MCpl. Graham Ragsdale (Team Commander), MCpl. Tim McMeekin , MCpl. Arron Perry , and Cpl. Dennis Eason .
A group of three al-Qaeda fighters was moving into a mountainside position when Furlong took aim with his Long Range Sniper Weapon (LRSW) , a .50-caliber McMillan Brothers Tac-50 rifle and ammunition loaded with 750 gr Hornady A-MAX very-low-drag bullets .
He began firing at a fighter carrying an RPK machine gun .
Pin Point Sniper Shots A Mile and A Half Away
His first shot missed and his second shot hit the knapsack on the target’s back.
The third struck the target’s torso, killing him.
The distance was measured as 2 ,430 metres (2 ,657 yd / 1.509 miles ).
With a muzzle speed of 823 m/s (2 , 700 ft/s), each shot reached the target almost four seconds after Furlong fired.
This feat is not typical for the effective range with a high first-hit probability of the employed rifle on non- static targets (see maximum effective range ).

Sniper Shots With Airsoft
With the advancements in non-lethal weapons technology, today’s airsoft rifles, with their all metal construction and comparable weight are almost indistinguishable from the real firearm they resemble.
Many weapons manufacturers have licensed airsoft replicas available at very reasonable prices.
Most high end airsoft rifles, especially the sniper rifle replicas, have muzzle velocities of 400 feet per second and faster.
With the ‘hop up’ ejectors on the automatic electric models, speed and accuracy are unbelievably impressive up to incredible distances.
There are many factors that can affect the range and velocity of an 8mm plastic pellet but when the conditions are right, I wouldn’t want to be within 300 or maybe 400 feet of an accurate sniper.
Sniper shots with airsoft rifles are much more realistic in training situations because of the awesome range and accuracy incorporated into today’s advanced all metal gear boxes with the hop up feature.
This little baby allows for muzzle velocities of 450fps and more in some cases.
